School of Engineering at Brown University – Providence, RI

Brown University’s School of Engineering, completed in February of 2018, was a new construction project connected to the existing Barus & Holley Complex. The 80,000 square foot building was designed to include Classrooms, Core Research Facilities, High-Tech Research Labs, as well as Open Spaces for Micro/Nano-Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Energy and the Environment Studies, and Information Technology for the Future and Entrepreneurial Innovation.

The Skyline Group’s Design/Engineering Team focused on providing Technology Design Documentation for the Security System frameworks as a component of the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process. The professionals on our team bring extensive and diverse communications experience to our projects as well as in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art communications technology. Our team understands the requirements of this sector of the industry. The Skyline Group worked in conjunction with Shawmut Design and Construction (SDC) and Kieran Timberlake Architects for the Access Control and Video Surveillance Systems.

Project Approach

Our approach to this project was consistent with our experience involving other projects of similar scope and commitment. This project benefited from our collaboration style approach to work in conjunction with the Brown Facilities Department, SDC, the Architect as well as other Consultants/Engineers and Trade Partners. This coordinated effort contributed toward a successful design for the School of Engineering’s Security System.

Scope of Work

We understand the value of collaboration and committed to working as a team in the best interest of the project.

  1. The first step was to meet with the Design and Construction Team to review the current design status and begin to develop the Security System and Low Voltage Cabling Programming Manual. These manuals served as a collection of design criteria information for all the Security System components and Low Voltage Infrastructure included in this project.

  2. In conjunction with meeting the Design Team, we met with the Brown Universities Facilities Management, Department of Public Safety and Computing and Information Services (CIS). From these meetings the revisions included details regarding the general requirements of these departments as well as project-specific details.

  3. Working in conjunction with SDC, and others as needed, including Trade Partners, Siemens Security and Columbus (door hardware), we met on a weekly basis with the Department Heads to include specific details regarding Access Control, Video Surveillance and Low Voltage to review the progress of these design documents.

  4. As progress developed, we provided design details to the Trade Partners for their proposed budgetary information.

  5. Along with SDC, we reviewed the Security System and Low Voltage budgetary details for accuracy and potential cost savings.

  6. As information was gathered from meetings, we updated the programming manuals, sketches, and drawings. We coordinated with the MEP team and the Architect for power and HVAC requirements for the Telcom Rooms. We also coordinated with Door Hardware Trade Partners for door hardware requirements.

  7. We issued Final Documents suitable for build as well as eventual AsBuilt documentation to each affected Trade Partner.
