Fairfield University Alumni OSP Project– Fairfield, CT

FFU engaged The Skyline Group (TSG) to document existing conditions and design an Outside Plant (OSP) cable relocation to support Technology across the entire campus, including the Network Service Provider cabling. Their central Network Operations Center (NOC) was located and distributed out of Alumni Hall. Alumni Hall was demolished to build the new basketball stadium, the Convocation Center.

Prior to demolishing Alumni Hall, relocating the NOC and supporting OSP communications cabling to Barone Campus Center (BCC) was the next step to be completed. The project entailed an extensive Duct Bank and Communications Cabling Audit.

TSG worked with a Communications Contractor and FFU IT to create new Site Plans and Butterfly Drawings documenting all OSP cabling distributing out of Alumni Hall. This included infrastructure for Voice, Network, and Lighting Control to buildings throughout campus. A new OSP Infrastructure System was designed consisting of single and multimode fiber and copper which connects the BCC to all buildings previously connecting through the Alumni Hall NOC.

The completed project provided FFU with redundant communications networks between the new central NOC at the BCC and various NOCs across campus.

Working in conjunction with Fairfield University’s representatives, TSG’s coordination and experience ensured a successful project.

Project Approach and Scope

Our scope for the Design/Coordination portion of this project was as follows:

  1. TSG incorporated information from the recent ComNet Physical OSP Cable Discovery and input from FFU IT to design a new OSP Communications Duct Bank.

  2. The information obtained from the Physical OSP Cable Discovery was used to determine the “New” Communications Cabling required to be distributed from the BCC to each of the FFU buildings currently being supported from Alumni Hall.

  3. The design of the OSP System and Infrastructure focused on converting the BCC as the Main Communications Center on one side of the FFU Campus and connected BCC to the Loyola to allow Alumni Hall to be replaced.

  4. TSG provided FFU with an OSP Communications Duct Bank and Communications Cable Design to convert the BCC into a Main Communications Center replacing Alumni Hall.

Deliverables

  1. TSG provided FFU with an Evaluation of Existing Conditions including cable type and quantities of all infrastructure affected by this Project.

  2. TSG provided FFU with a Telecommunications OSP Infrastructure Drawing converting BCC as the Main Communications Center (Construction Drawing) and OSP Division 27 Communications Cabling Specification suitable for bidding.
