Brown University– Performing Arts Center, Providence Rhode Island

Working with Brown University’s Facilities Management, Brown’s Safety and Security Group, Shawmut Design and Construction, REX Architects and all other trade partners, The Skyline Group provided a coordinated effort for the Security System design as a component of the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process. The new 80,000 square foot building will be constructed on College Hill between Waterman and Angell Streets. The new building shall include spaces for music, theater, dance as well as a flexible 500 seat performance space. Construction is scheduled to begin in October of 2018 with a completion date of August 2020.

This project had the focused efforts of The Skyline Groups (TSG) Design/Engineering Group. This group consists of

individuals with vast and diverse communications experience, as well as in depth knowledge of state-of-the-art communications technology. The TSG Team coupled with an understanding of Brown’s needs and requirements for this sector of the industry, assures a successful project. The proposed team for this project consists of John E Higgins, RCDD as Principal in Charge, James Katseff, RCDD as Project Engineer and Tim Baeta CTS as AutoCAD/BIM coordinator and QA/QC reviewer.

Fairfield University – Dolan School of Business, Fairfield Connecticut

The Skyline Group provided Information Technology infrastructure design documents for the new state-of-the-art Dolan School of Business academic building which broke ground in the spring of 2018 with completion scheduled for the fall of 2019. Plans for the new building feature modern simulated trading in a dynamic and interactive learning environment, a big data analytics lab, an entrepreneurship center with ideation lab space, a gaming lab, active learning and case-based classrooms. The new Dolan School building will support the School’s exceptional faculty, nationally-ranked business disciplines, strong student internships, and professional development programs, all backed by the University’s engaged alumni network. Working in conjunction with the Fairfield University (FFU) Infrastructure Services Group, FFU Facilities Management, SLAM Collaborative and MEP engineers, our deliverables included Schematic Design, Design Documents and Construction Document drawings and Division 27 specifications for the incoming utilities to the building as well as in-building connectivity suitable for bid.

Brown University– School of Engineering, Providence Rhode Island

The new 80,000 square foot building was built adjacent to and connect to the existing Barus & Holley complex. The new building included cleanrooms, core research facilities, high tech research labs and open spaces for micro/nano-technology, biomedical engineering, energy and the environment, information technology for the future and entrepreneurial innovation. Working with Shawmut Design and Construction (SDC), TSG provided Security System design services for the new School of Engineering building constructed on the Campus of Brown University. The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) design concept included coordination with the Brown University Department of Facilities Management and the Safety and Security Department, SDC, Kieran Timberlake Architects and various trade groups to complete the design/build project. Project Approach and Scope Our approach was consistent with our experience for similar projects in scope and commitment. The project required an owner’s representative style approach to collaborate with the project stakeholders and trade partners and to design the security system as one entity. We understood the value of collaboration and commit to working as a team in the best interest of the project.

Providence College – Ruane Friar Development Center, Providence Rhode Island

The new 70,000 square foot Friar Development Center will house the Providence College Men’s basketball practice and support facility and expanded career service center serving both the student and the student athlete. The Skyline team provided Audio Visual systems, practice court technology, building utility connectivity as well as LAN Technology Services Qualifications Page 55 in-building design documents suitable for bid to technology system providers. Our effort started with the enabling phase and worked in conjunction with Providence College Capital Project Group, Academic Media Services, Men’s Basketball management team, Perkins Eastman Architects and MEP Engineers. We utilized PC design standards to develop construction and bid documents for all technology systems included in the project. We provided on-site owner’s representation project management services for the entire technology system build-out. Fairfield University – Outside Plant and Telecommunications Vault Relocation, Fairfield Connecticut

The project required the evaluation of existing conditions and eventual design for the relocation of a telecommunications vault and conduit system relocated to a new maintenance hole and conduit routes to enable the construction of a new Dormitory building. The telecommunications vault supported various communication services to most campus buildings to include Fiber Optic LAN/WAN, Voice (Fiber Optic/Copper), Cellular, CATV, and Fire Alarm (Fiber Optic/Copper) cabling. The project required the relocation of all active services to a new maintenance hole, the removal of abandoned cabling and the shut down and re-activation of active circuits for Fairfield University connections, the Community Access Television and multiple Cellular Service Providers. The Skyline Group worked to augment the Fairfield University staff in conjunction with their respective contractors and service providers to determine all cable media to be replaced, removed and/or relocated and the restoration of services to normal operations.

Providence College – Science Complex, Providence Rhode Island

The new addition to the Albertus Magnus Science Complex, is a $50 million multi-phased project, an initiative of the Campus Transformation Project. The 36,000 square foot addition to the existing three building 70,000-gross square foot Science Complex, is the first of multiple phases with extensive renovations currently in design. The Complex houses teaching and research space for the Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Psychology, and Engineering-Physics-Systems Departments. The new spaces will provide the collaboration amongst students and faculty within a multi-disciplinary environment across a variety of spaces including state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls, labs, offices, seminar rooms, collaborative areas, and student/faculty common areas.

Providence College – New Dormitory and Fine Arts Building, Providence Rhode Island

These two projects were built at the same time and designed and bid as separate projects. The scope for these projects included the site evaluation of the current Outside Plant cabling system to determine duct bank and manhole requirements to feed both buildings and future buildings.

The design included coordination with the Providence College Telecommunications staff, the Mechanical, the Electrical and the Plumbing Engineers. The design encompassed Telecommunications outlet locations and type, space requirements for the proposed cabling system the cable tray, electrical outlet requirements at the workstations and Telecommunications Rooms (TR), lighting requirements for the TRs and pathway requirements. The Telecommunications cabling specifications and drawings were developed in accordance with the Providence College Telecommunications Standards. The deliverables included a Request for Proposal and bid package for both new buildings and the OSP as separate packages.

Project Case Study – Schneider Arena Audio-Visual Systems Build-out and Commissioning

This design-build project for a Division One, state of the art $20 Million-dollar athletic facility encompassed multiple facets of technology-based systems including television network broadcast cabling and equipment. This broadcasting coverage included NCAA required game-day league video cameras and playback for officials, mobile broadcast studio connectivity, digital signage, flat panel displays, game clocks, arena game day video, local sound systems for the luxury suites, video capture and storage and coaching software. In addition, the project encompassed LAN, Telephony, Wireless next generation 802.11ac equipment, Video Security and Access Control connectivity.

This fast-track project also required additional design and support for building automation, ice monitoring- management, hydro-therapy and food services.

Acting as the owner’s representative was the key component giving us the ability to coordinate the various trades and stakeholders while adapting new technologies and systems to existing infrastructure and applications on a very aggressive timetable for the opening of the Ice Hockey season.

 

In addition to the design and specification work, the Skyline group handled several bid packages, RFP’s, Contractor evaluations, technology system assessments and integration coordination along with outside plant work to upgrade pathways, transmission media and service provider connections for CATV, Satellite TV and head-end equipment.

The project specifications and drawings were developed in accordance with the Providence College Infrastructure Standards, Industry best practices and methodologies.

 

The field support team for this project consisted of four members of The Skyline Group including Principal in Charge, Project Manager, Designer and CAD Field Support. We managed this very active design and implementation process in real-time, coordinating with members of the General Contractor, MEP and structural engineers and allied specialty trades including Hoist Controls, Signage, Local Sound and official league video.

Providence College – Ruane Humanities, Providence Rhode Island

IT and A/V Systems Build-out and Commissioning

The Skyline Group provided Information Technology design, project management and construction administration services for the new Humanities Building constructed in the spring of 2012. The building was built on the south west side of the campus next to the Phillips Library and the Hickey, SOWA and Albertus building complex. Construction began in June of 2012 with a completion date of September 2013.

 

This AIA Architectural Award-Winning Project for “Outstanding Design in the Post-Secondary School Category” is a 64,000-square-foot, three-story new construction project that was designed and built from start to finish in 18 months with a budget of ~$20 Million dollars.

 

Work was completed in the summer of 2013 and ready for the start of fall semester classes. Designed and built in an architectural style to complement Providence College’s first building, Harkins Hall.

 

The Skyline team worked as owner’s representatives for the Technology and Audio-Visual Systems infrastructure and were part of the combined group of owners, architects and consultants that brought this campus showpiece to life.

Together we integrated 21st century technology systems for students, faculty and staff into this collegiate gothic styled building with architectural details and aesthetic design considerations to ensure a true to form building with the benefit of state of the art educational and technology tools, Audio-Visual applications and technology services.

 

One of the first campus installations of IEEE 802.11ac Wireless LAN Technology in the country, the building has wireless coverage throughout the premises and in adjacent outdoor classroom areas incorporating custom designed, integrated stanchions for Emergency Call “Blue Light” Phones, CCTV Cameras, Strobes and Wireless Antenna’s.

 

After the initial Programming and Design phases, the Construction Administration and Project Management was handled by the Skyline team acting as the owner’s representative. Key factors in our ability to coordinate the various MEP trades and stakeholders were our on-site, live interactions on a daily basis as the eyes and ears for the owner. We were able to adapt new technologies and systems while maintaining the architectural integrity and vision of the school, its benefactors and architectural team while adhering to a closely managed timetable.

 

In addition to design and specification work, The Skyline Group handled several bid packages, RFP’s, Contractor evaluations, technology system assessments and integration coordination.

 

Working with the A/V Consultant, the commissioning of the A/V Systems through to completion and owner acceptance was a key focus area to ensure integration and coordination of all involved systems and staff that achieved the desired objectives, system design performance and operation criteria

 


After the initial Programming and Design phases, Construction Administration and Project Management performed by the Skyline team acting as the Owners Representative were key components in our ability to coordinate the various trades and stakeholders, adapting new technologies and systems while maintaining the architectural integrity and vision of the school, benefactors and architectural teams while adhering to a closely managed timetable.
